CU Boulder Film Studies course, Prof. Jeanne Liotta
What do scientists and artists have in common? Both use materials and methods to analyze and picture the world around us, through research, observation, measuring, experimenting, and --imagination! This course will take a look at numerous art and science collaborations and will ask questions about how we move from research and data into the image, and in particular the moving image. Studying works from scientist-filmmaker Jean Painleve to the scienceist-imagemakers at NASA, as well as contemporary projects funded by the National Science Foundation. Topics may include tectonic plates, binocular vision, light sensitive emulsions, heat-sensitive cameras, non-metaphors, poetic facts, interpreted data, the scientific imagination, and the virtual sublime. Readings from Alan Lightman, Werner Heisenberg, Laurie Anderson, and Sherry Turkle , TED talks, and SEED magazine Field trips and guest lectures will feature prominently. Students will research a creative topic of their own interest in the sciences and present a final project in the form of illustrated lecture or media work. Open to anyone with a curious mind.
